The path to publication

We break down the publication process into the 7 steps below. You can join us at any point on the journey, whether you want help with one aspect or many, whether you need a few hours of assistance or to work with us on a book project lasting months.

Aims

Identifying what you want to achieve with the title – where you are on the book’s journey, timescales to publication, and what you want to achieve. This includes how you hope to produce, distribute and sell the book. We also look at your experience as an author, your network, your marketing savvy, and, of course, your budget.

All of the above factor into the steps going forward – even if some do not come into play immediately.

Audience

We need to understand your expected audience, its demographic, key markets, and how you plan to generate sales i.e. how to connect the book with readers. This affects many of the following steps, from the book’s metadata to distribution and marketing. It’s also a factor in the overall effort and costs of the project.

Manuscript

The book is nothing without the manuscript. We’ll discuss how it’s been produced, what input it’s had from other people (professional or amateur), and what you have in terms of supporting material (e.g. a synopsis).

Formatting & Design

Based on the Aims and Audience, we’ll work together on the most appropriate specification for the book – for example size, typesetting, cover design, and the miscellaneous elements within the book that turn it from plain text into a finished article.

Publishing & Distribution

It’s time for the nitty-gritty of preparing to get the book out into the world. This may range from having a few copies printed to facilitating global print & distribution in multiple formats.

It’s important to have the correct, integrated solution, and with this comes the need to deal with multiple suppliers and websites – all of which we can take care of for you.

We’ll also think about the book’s launch, and plan how you’re going to market & promote this.

Marketing

Sales requires marketing, and this can encompass everything from in-person contact, to website, webshop, advertising, newsletters, your network of friends and contacts, promotional content and—often crucially—social media. Which tools and routes are best to explore?

Elevating

If your title is already published, do you want to achieve more? Perhaps you need to revise the book, have lost part of your existing publishing ecosystem, want to open up new distribution channels, or explore new marketing initiatives? We’ve helped many clients who were in this position.
